A penalty relief request is easier to understand when it tells a factual, chronological story. Start by identifying the exact penalty and the period it covers.
Name the issue before explaining it
Record the tax year, penalty type, amount, and notice number. Separate the underlying tax from penalties and interest. If a figure is unclear, make that a question rather than assuming the entire balance is one charge.
The IRS describes several penalty relief routes, including administrative relief and reasonable cause, with requirements depending on the penalty. Relief is not automatic because you have a difficult story. IRS penalty relief guidance ↗
Create a timeline supported by documents
- When was the filing or payment due?
- What event prevented timely compliance?
- How long did that event affect you?
- When were you able to act again?
- What steps did you take once able?
Attach a document to each important point where you can: correspondence, records of disruption, proof of filing, or payment confirmation. Keep the narrative direct. Explain what happened and how it affected the specific obligation, avoiding unrelated details.
If more than one year is involved, create a separate line for each. Similar circumstances may have different timing, and a bundled explanation can hide the part a reviewer needs to understand.
Review the request and the continuing balance
Follow the route described in your IRS notice. Ask a provider whether a request can be made by phone or needs written support, and how a decision will be documented. IRS penalty relief guidance ↗
Discuss the rest of the account too. A penalty request is not the same as a payment plan for the tax balance. If you call Republic Tax, clarify whether their fee includes the request, follow-up, and any separate payment discussion.
Keep a copy of what is submitted and the date. If relief is denied, read the decision and any response instructions promptly before choosing the next step.
Three questions to take with you
- Which penalty is the request about?
- Which rule or relief route applies?
- How will the remaining balance be addressed?
